Personally, YNAB has cut down the amount of time I spend managing my daily budgeting and cash flow. If I do it a few times a week, it takes me just a few minutes (maximum) to get “caught up” on my balances using YNAB. I quickly withdrew my refund request and started using the software. My experience is that once the concept is understood (which the creator invests a LOT of time in teaching through help materials), the program does exactly what it claims to do. This has revolutionized the way our family spends money. The budget is no longer a drudgery, but rather is totally freeing. It is so freeing to get a month ahead on paying bills, but even if you aren’t planning to do that, you can use this software and tell your dollars where to go instead of wondering where they went! I thought budgeting would be too confusing for me. I believe the makers admit this and are working on adding to this feature. I’d really like to see a way to do reports on “payees” instead of “fields” only, but I can do with what the software offers since it brings so much to the table. I have been using YNAB for coming up on two years now and it, combined with Dave Ramsey’s teachings (Total Money Makeover) has literally changed our lives. We had managed to get ourselves in a bunch of debt and weren’t sure how we were going to make it out of the big hole we dug. Quite frankly their budget set-up interface left a lot to be desired, only allowing you to create a general monthly budget. With YNAB, I was up and running within a few minutes, and after playing with all the features to see what it could do, I was fully loaded with a budget and bank transactions within twenty minutes. It is NOT a personal accounting system. I thought YNAB would be my way out of Quicken, but it isn’t.
