Is A Journalism Course Online Definitely Going To Help You Become An Improved Writer?
If your ideal job is being a writer, then you might be enticed by the idea of taking a journalism course online. Most writers fall into one of two different camps: those who have studied literature, journalism or publishing to a high level, or those who have a natural talent for it and pursue it relentlessly until they get noticed. However, even for all of these writers, an online course can be a great way to help progression. But are these online courses worth your money and time, and will they help you realise your dream?
Check out the content of the course
Check out what areas are covered in your course. Is it all creative, or are there modules on organising your writer’s life, getting published and contacting editors etc. Also, find out who will be marking and moderating your work – will these people be published writers themselves?
Beware of scams
There are a few scams out there which claim to give you your course fees back if you don’t make a certain amount of money from writing in your first year. However, sometimes the material they give you is too complex to follow or intended to make you fail, such as asking for 20,000 word critique on an obscure topic for one of your first assignments. These scams rely on the fact that most people are willing to accept that they have failed rather than claim that the course is poorly coordinated.
What if I choose not to take a course?
If you want to get writing experience, why not offer your services for free? For example if you’d like to be a music journalist, there are plenty of red hot music reviews websites you can search for online who accept online submissions from new writers. This way you can build a portfolio and then decide whether you want to spend your money on a journalism course online.
