The Legend of Lord Venkateswara
The Curse & Descent to Earth
According to ancient texts, during the Kali Yuga, sage Bhrigu visited Vaikuntha to test the trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. When he kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest, Goddess Lakshmi was offended and left Vaikuntha.
To be with his beloved Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu descended to Earth and settled on Venkatadri hills (Tirumala). He is known here as Lord Venkateswara – “The Lord who destroys sins.”
Marriage to Padmavathi
On Earth, Lord Venkateswara married Padmavathi, daughter of the local king Akasaraja. For the grand wedding, he borrowed a huge sum from Kubera (the treasurer of gods). Devotees believe their donations help repay this divine debt.
